GENERAL RULES
1. The committee of Linley Wood Golf Society shall consist of a maximum of 12 members. To hold a position on the committee that member shall have at least one complete year’s continuous membership of the society. In addition to this a member must have served the year previously on the committee to hold a position of officer of the committee. In order to hold a meeting a quorum of 33% must be present and to effect any rule change at least 50% of the committee must be present.
2. The Committee of Linley Wood Golf Society has the right to introduce and change, any of the following rules should it deem fit to do so, in line with rule 1, but with any change, must inform the membership at its earliest convenience.
3. Any disputes or disagreements must be forwarded to the Committee in writing, as soon as possible after the event in question for discussion. With this, any decision made by the Committee is final.
4. All rulings on the golf course will adhere to those laid down by the Royal And Ancient Golf Club Of St. Andrews. Also, any rules stipulated by the golf club management on the day of competition will also be followed (Winter rules, pick and place near saplings etc.).
5. Members wishing to play in a particular match must submit their request to play to the treasurer (normally as a result on a calling notice via email/WhatsApp), prior to that match. Payment can be via cheque / Bank Transfer prior to the match or via cheque/cash on the day of the match. It is the right of the Treasurer and/or the Match Secretary to refuse entry should this not be the case.
6. For those members playing in a match, they must meet at the club at the time designated when the grouping draws will be communicated to the members (after being made in advance by the match secretary or deputy). Anyone wishing a preferred tee time must indicate this when requesting their entry to the treasurer
7. In the event of there being more demand for places than places booked, a first come first served operation will come into effect. A waiting list will then be drafted, with the first member on the list being given the first option to play should a member in the original party back out. In any event, the Match Secretary’s decision will be final.
8. Should a member who has been allocated a space in a match find that he/she cannot attend, he/she must inform the Match Secretary or Treasurer, as soon as possible. Failure to do so will result in the loss of green fees and a possible one match ban. Should this withdrawal be ‘late’ (i.e. once the society numbers have been communicated to the visiting club, by a society official), this will also result in the loss of green fees (if so charged by the visiting club)
9. Should a member retire before the end of a match, the member will automatically be disqualified. Should there be a valid reason for doing so, an appeal may be sent to the Committee in writing.
10. Should a match be played when dangerous weather i.e. Lightening, is seen from any part of the course the match will be immediately suspended. The match will be resumed/abandoned at the discretion of the match secretary. A minimum of nine holes must be completed by every player in order for a result to be declared
HANDICAPPING RULES
11. All new members joining the society with an official club handicap will play their first three matches of 50% of that handicap to allow handicap appraisal during the first three matches played, and from then on, he/she will assume a golf society handicap allocated by the Handicap Secretary.
12. If the new member is not in receipt of a golf club handicap, to obtain a Society handicap, he/she may forward three recent general play scorecards (up to three months hence), signed by two current members as a true record of ability with his/her application form. A Society handicap will then be calculated and passed to the member as soon as possible.
13. If none of the methods outlined in 11 & 12 are possible, a new member may still join the Society by playing their first three competitions on a handicap of 0. After playing three competitions, a Society handicap will then be calculated and passed to the member by the Handicap Secretary. Whilst playing the three competitions, the member will not be placed in ANY of them (including Order of Merits, Colin Howle, Stableford League etc). An existing member must also play in at least three qualifying Society matches in a rolling twelve month period to maintain a current Society handicap. If a member allows this to lapse, then they must play their following three matches off a handicap of 0, and follow the same rules as those for a new member as outlined earlier in this rule.
14. The calculations used for increasing and decreasing handicaps will be carried out by the software package known as ‘Handicap Master’ which is owned by the society. The Society Handicap Secretary has the right to alter any handicaps as he/she deems to be in the interest of the society.
15. Once an official Society handicap has been issued, this will remain with the member as long as rules 11 to 13 are adhered to.
INDIVIDUAL MATCH RULES
STABLEFORD LEAGUE:-
16. This competition will take place over six individual matches, two played at each of the three selected courses. There will be one match a month between October and March.
17. The member’s best individual points score from each venue when added together will count towards the overall score. Therefore, to qualify, a member must play in at least one match at each venue.
18. Should there be a tie in an individual match, the winners will be awarded the same prize; i.e. there will be no count back.
19. Should there be a tie at the top in the overall league after the six matches have been played, the member with the highest individual points score will be deemed the winner. In the event that there is still a tie, then the second best score will be taken into consideration, and so on from other venues until a winner is found. This relates to the keeper of the main trophy.
20. All members playing in this competition will play off 7/8ths handicaps.
21. In the event of a tie at the top of the league, all those involved will qualify for the Champions Trophy
22. Winter rules will apply on FAIRWAYS ONLY for the six matches unless otherwise stated as a local rule. If a ball comes to rest in the rough in a situation where it is plugged, the member marking the card of the player in question will be consulted as to whether or not a free drop should be given. If agreed, the drop may take place no more than ONE club length from the ball’s original resting place.
THE FOUNDERS CUP (formally THE COLIN HOWLE MEMORIAL TROPHY):-
23. The competition will be won by the member with the lowest aggregate par score for his/her best three performances during the six Summer Medal matches. Thus, to qualify a member must play in at least three Summer Medals.
24. In the event of a tie in an individual match, the winners will be given the same prize I.e. there will be no count back.
25. If there is a tie for the overall competition, the member with the lowest individual par score will be the winner. Should there still be a tie, the second lowest will then be taken into consideration and so on until a winner is found. All those tying in the first place would qualify for the Champions Trophy.
GOLF WEEKEND:-
26. This competition will be played over three days, with one round of Stableford golf being played each day.
27. The winner will be the member with the highest aggregate Stableford points score over the three rounds.
28. In the event of a tie, the member with the highest individual points score will be deemed the winner. Should there still be a tie, the second highest will then be taken, and so on until a winner is found. The winner of the overall competition will qualify for the Champions Trophy match. The winners of the 3 individual rounds do NOT qualify.
CHAMPIONS TROPHY:-
29. This competition will be contested by the winners of ALL competitions throughout the year (inc. ties). The current holder of this competition is also eligible to compete as of right.
30. The match will take place at the end of the year, sometime during September, and will be a stroke-
31. The winner will be the member with the lowest nett score.
32. In the event of a tie, there will be a count back of a) Best nett score back nine, b) Best nett last six, c) Best nett last three, d) last one. until an overall winner can be established
ORDER OF MERIT.
33. The winners of the three categories (regulars, seniors and ladies) in this competition will be the member with the best aggregate points score total from up to a maximum of their best eight returns.
34. The eight points scores will be taken out of ALL matches played through the year except the Golf Weekend and Captains Challenge.
35. A Senior is determined by the age of the member on October 1st. Should the member attain the age of 55 either on or before this date, the member will be eligible to play in the Seniors section of this competition. The member has the option to ‘opt into’ the senior section. This option remains available up to the age of 60 when senior status is compulsory. The transition into the seniors is non-
36. Should there be a tie in any of the categories, the member with the best individual points score will be deemed the winner. If there is still a tie, then the second highest will be taken, and so on until a winner is found.
37. The points scores will be awarded to the match result as follows: 1st = 15pts, 2nd = 12, 3rd = 9, 4th = 7, 5th = 6, 6th = 5, 7th = 4, 8th = 3, 9th = 2, 10th = 1, 11th onwards = 0. Each player will then take their allotted points to their respective section.
38. If it is the case that fixtures are called off due to any reason, then the qualifying number of matches will be reduced as follows:-
CAPTAINS DAY:-
41. The venue for this match will be chosen by the Captain of the year, with the date being at the choice of the Captain.
42. The itinerary on the day will also follow a format chosen by the Captain.
43. In the event of a tie, in the main 18 hole competition, there will be a countback of a) Best nett score back nine, then b) Best nett last six, and then c) Best nett last three, d) last one. In relation to the Champions Trophy, all those tied for the win will qualify.
TWO’S COMPETITION.
48. All members playing in any Society competition throughout the year apart from the Matchplay Knockout, will be automatically entered into this competition.
49. Should a gross 2 be carded on any hole during any Society fixture, where the member is playing his / her own ball, the member will win one share of the total pot of money.
50. The total pot of money will be accumulated by the levy of 50 pence on the match fee per player for 18 holes matches over the course of the season
51. The monies won will be handed out at the end of the society year in the form of credits.
MOBILE PHONES
52. If a mobile phone is used during any fixture, other than with prior permission, that member will be immediately disqualified. This will apply to use on the course or in the clubhouse
MAJOR COMPETITIONS
53. In order to qualify for a major competition (a major is construed to be a competition with a trophy which is kept by the winner for twelve months) a member must have previously competed in three Society events in that calendar year.
SLOW PLAY
54. To combat slow play, each group will be assigned a Committee Member. All members of the group must heed the advice of the Committee Member or be reported to the Committee for further consideration
NEAREST THE PIN
55. A charity ‘Nearest The Pin’ competition will be played, during each society match, organised by the match secretary (or nominated person), with a levy of £1 per person entry fee.The winning member will receive 50 per cent of the event entry fees for the day, and the charity the remaining 50 per cent. If there is no ‘nearest the pin’ at a particular event, all the entry fees will pass to the charity pot. The charity will be decided on a yearly basis by the committee and publicised to the members via society website.
